Below retail exceedingly rare flawless and stable contraluz opal from opal butte, oregon. This piece is priced at almost 30% under suggested retail. I had one beautiful, clear, clean piece of rough from which i cut two nice sized pieces. There was a small third piece i cut from the original that had inclusions along one side of it too. Top quality gem grade and beautifully colored.
Contraluz has always seemed sort of magical to me. Because it can appear as clear and colorless as air or water. And then when light shines though it. It fills with a rainbow of gorgeous colors. The is the meaning of contraluz.
The light that brings it to life is coming from the back (or the side) and not reflected mainly from the front. If you want something that just catches the light all the time. Or is very showy from across the room. This is not it this is a collector grade, rare find from one of the few high quality gem opal mines in the united states. Contraluz also occurs in mexican and ethiopian opals but they have a different look and are also more commonly found in those areas. Oregon contraluz is both a hard to find collectible and a conversation piece and very special. Only a small percentage of the gem grade opal from this site is contraluz. I refer to this shape as sort of a rounded brick. It is polished on all sides and could be set or handled many different ways. There is no set back or front. This is priced several hundred under retail it is 27 carats. This item is made of gemstone.
