This lovely textile is french and dates c1880-1890. The fabric is wonderful this piece of this collection is pieced. So there are many of the wonderful fabrics sewn together to make this lovely curtain panel it's a chinoiserie printed, heavy weight cotton. I love the design this fabric was a furnishing fabric and is printed on both sides. The front side uses the fabric with a red ground and the back was printed in the same pattern but the design has a dark brown toned ground i love this pattern.
This curtain would have hung from a bed. The cotton is a heavy weight fabric, sturdy and wonderful this would have hung from a bed and used for both decoration and privacy.
The back has the thin tape that would have hung it around the four poster bed i've kept this textile in as found condition and i believe it needs to be kept this way, unwashed. The reason i say this is that if you look closely at the pattern, you will see some red dye transfer spots, so i would be worried to water wash. The alternative is to dry clean only i have other pieces from this bedding collection, please see my other textiles. Measurements : this lovely curtain measures approximately 78 inches long by 63 inches wide at the bottom. The top, where it is gathered measures 48 inches wide.
Condition: this textile is in as found, not freshly laundered condition. (please see above for more information about this). The top half has many small holes and a few small tears so if hanging as a curtain, this will probably need to be backed for some reason there was more wear at the top there are some hand stitched mends, some faded areas , some unevenly faded areas, etc please use the zoom feature to view the condition of this textile closely not without signs of time and use often inherent in these wonderful antique textiles all condition reflected in the price.
This item is made of cotton.
